NFPA 1142: Standard on Water Supplies for Suburban and Rural Fire Fighting, 2007 Edition

Follow the latest rules so adequate water supplies are available to fight fire with NFPA 1142!

NFPA 1142 identifies minimum standards to assist rural and suburban fire departments in developing sufficient water supplies where no in-ground hydrant system (or an inadequate one) exists. It provides methods for determining water supply requirements based on occupancy and construction classifications. This Standard also provides information regarding apparatus construction for water tankers.

Among the changes in the 2007 edition:

The Standard was completely revised to better organize the requirements and to better differentiate between alternative water supplies for fire fighting and municipal type water systems.

New requirements were added for specific water delivery rates to the fire scene when an alternative water supply is being used.

The material on designing dry hydrant systems was reorganized and updated into a separate Annex.

Annex C was retitled as Mobile Water Supply Apparatus and text was revised to delete materials that discussed or encouraged using home built or converted vehicles for emergency operations.

Annex G was retitled Municipal-Type Water Supply and new requirements for duration of fire flow were added.

All annexes were reviewed and updated to reflect current practices.

Chapter 4 (Structure Surveys) and Chapter 7 (Calculating Minimum Water Supplies) were combined into a revised Chapter 4 titled Calculating Minimum Water Supplies.

Chapter 10 (Reports and Records) was deleted and the material integrated into the other chapters as appropriate.
